Emily has had a deep love of music and singing since she saw The Little Mermaid in theatres at the age of three. Besides annoying her peers and friends with her incessant singing, her love of song has led to her pursuing a professional stage career.
Emily graduated from MRU with a Theatre Performance diploma and then moved to New York City where she obtained her BFA in Musical Theatre. Spending four years in the big apple transformed her vocal practice, studying with experts in Feldenkrais, Alexander technique, and brain-based vocal approaches that now inform her vocal philosophy. Since returning to Calgary, she has worked with theatre companies across western Canada, including Lunchbox Theatre, Theatre Calgary, Stage West, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, and the Citadel Theatre. Her work as a composer has been seen at Pace University, 54 below, Lunchbox Theatre, Forte Musical Theatre, and Eclipse Theatre. She is currently developing several plays for young audiences and is pursuing her MFA in Creative Writing at UBC.
Her biggest love of all is teaching, and she has recently taken on arts education as a primary focus. Emily has taught voice, music, musical theatre, and acting with Arts Commons, Youth Singers of Calgary, Calgary Young Peoples Theatre, and The Performance Studio, and has taught private voice and piano as well. She believes that voice is an extension of self, and the voice is one of the most precious and individual creative gifts humans possess. Helping someone discover the power and authenticity of their own voice is a beautiful and honorable journey, and she is so excited for a year of growth and discovery with her students.
